Updating OSX

The Mac OSX comes with a Software Update application that periodically checks for new updates to all your Apple software. For the applications themselves such as the iLife or iWork suites, Logic etc this is fine.

However, for Operating System updates, I prefer to download them from Apple’s downloads page and install them separately. Before installing though, I would advise running the Disk Utility or something like Onyx to repair permissions then run a Time Machine backup if you use it.(I also keep a text file that I use to note why I make specific backups with date and time info.)

This seems to be a more reliable approach than using the Software Update method and means you are installing with a cleaner Disk and the safety of knowing you have a backup in place.
